If you live in the New River Valley and you are looking for a place to sight-in or shoot your gun, the only place around here worth visiting is the Montgomery County Shooting Range. Located near Blacksburg, this shooting range is considered by many to be one of the best ranges in this part of Virginia. At this range, there are places where you can practice shooting your shotguns, rifles, handguns and even your bow.

The upper range:This portion of the range is a 100-meter range and is designated as the rifle and pistol practice area. There are 18 shooting lanes; 10 lanes are sheltered and have shooting benches that will accommodate both right and left-hand shooters.

Only cardboard or paper targets are permitted at this range. There is no need to buy targets; we have a variety of turkey, squirrel and various other targets that can be printed free from our website: click here to download(PDF) and print your free shooting tatgets.

The lower range:This portion of the range is designated as the shotgun and archery practice area. Here you will find a single position shotgun range that is specially designed for skeet or clay target shooting.

The Montgomery County range is open Monday-Sunday from sunrise to sunset. It is open to the public and is free to use, but if you enjoy using this range, please don’t be afraid to contribute to one of the donation boxes. These donations help offset the maintenance and operation cost and guarantee that we will be able to enjoy this range for years to come. Also, the Forest Service folks ask that you clean up after yourself before leaving.

Directions: From Virginia Tech Campus, merge on to US 460 west. After about 5 miles, turn right on to State Route 621 (Craig Creek Road). Follow this road for about ¼ mile and you will see the sign for the shooting range on your left.
