The Massive Cliffs of Pembroke, Va.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

The Cliffs on Route 623 in Pembroke, Virginia
On State Route 623 in Pembroke, massive cliffs can be seen on each side of the road. Throughout the years, I have mentioned these cliffs to several people, and to my surprise, almost everyone has said that they’ve never even heard of them. I’ve also mentioned them to people that have lived around here their entire life, and I’ve mostly received a face drawn in disbelief as their only response.

It is hard to describe the mass of these cliffs with words or pictures, for neither does it any justice. This is just one of those places that you have to see with your own eyes to appreciate.

Directions:
From Blacksburg, follow US west for about 15 miles to Pembroke. From US 460, turn left on Castle Rock Drive. From Castle Rock Drive, take an immediate right on to Snidow Street. From Snidow Street, take a left on to State Route 623-River Road. Follow SR-623 for a few miles untill you see the cliffs.

This is from some kind of construction, or mining. It’s not natural. But it is pretty. Find out what made these cliffs and I’ll fix you up a nice batch of chocolate cookies.

This is where one of the area’s limestone quarries were. My grandfather worked there in the ’30s (?)
